For the first seventeen days of November, 1914, the 1st Royal Warwickshire battalion of 10 Brigade, 4th Division were in trenches at Houplines, the eastern part of Armentières next to the border with Belgium. They came under fire of all kinds while here but particularly so on 11th November, when the enemy launched a heavy attack at Ypres which was supported by a heavy all day bombardment of Houplines followed by infantry attacks. Donald Rennie was killed at 8.30pm when he was hit by a piece of shrapnel. |
